Today I look to the resilience and persistence of camas blooms for inspiration. I learn from the years they take to bloom, that change and beautiful things take time. I take heart knowing that below the surface, even when all seems still, there is potential if we persist in seeing it through, and protect its right to unfold in its own way, at its own pace.
Today I carry the stories of those in my community impacted by the severe lack (and continued reduction) of services for adults with eating disorders. Today I will sit in the Legislature of B.C. alongside some of my community members and those I am honoured to work alongside in Vancouver Island Voices for Eating Disorders (a passion project of ours.)
I know it is a great privilege to be one of the faces that elected officials will look upon today when asked for accountability and change. I will hold each vulnerable story of those struggling in my community, who cannot be present today, in my heart and mind.
To everyone who has - and continues to contribute to our work, we owe you our thanks as we would not be here without you.
We are here. We are worthwhile. We will keep fighting towards the light of day and our right to bloom as we are - defined only by ourselves.
- S.
